Hampton Policeman

Firemen have long played an important role in public service and Twickenham acquired its first engine in 1738.

Policing in the modern sense began with the establishment of the Metropolitan Police in 1830. In 1840 their jurisdiction was extended to include further areas including Twickenham, Teddington and Hampton.

Teachers have featured since the first recorded school in Hampton in 1557 and Twickenham in about 1645. The Elementary Education Act of 1870 instituted national policy and was followed by the Education Act of 1902. This Act led to the building of a number of new Council Schools: Trafalgar School opened in 1904 and Orleans in 1910 with Nelson Road School, Whitton in 1911 and Percy Road School, Hampton in 1907.

Hospitals also provided vital local services and employment. The Teddington and Hampton Wick Memorial Hospital opened in 1875 and was replaced by the Teddington Memorial Hospital in 1929. Hampton Cottage Hospital was built in 1912-13. Twickenham had St. John's Hospital in Amyand Park Road, founded by Elizabeth Twining, opening in 1880.
