York House in 1808

Town Hall

York House stands near the centre of Twickenham, near St Mary’s Church.

Today York House is the "Town Hall" of the London Borough of Richmond-upon-Thames. Meetings take place in the Council Chamber where elected Councillors debate, argue and make major decisions on local issues such as education and housing.

York House in about 1924

17th century house and garden

The oldest part of the house was built in the 17th century and the side wings were added much later. Some rooms on the second floor remain 17th century in character but most of the larger spaces are 18th and 19th century in style. The main staircase is probably original. 'Dragon horses'The house faces a sunken garden with an old stone footbridge crossing the roadway and leading to the riverside. The last resident of York House, Sir Ratan Tata, brought the fountain to the riverside garden
and the statues: water nymphs surmounted by horses.
